What do Selena Gomez and I have in Common?

Do you feel like you're stuck in a job or relationship you hate? Do you feel like your constant worrying or anxiety is exhausting you? Do you feel like you need to "do do do" but worry about the results?

These are your saboteurs and they're running the show.  By getting mentally fit, you can learn to quiet them, intercept them, and access your Sage brain, which is where your higher self-resides.

Selena Gomez and I are both huge advocates of Mental Fitness.  She understands the importance of this and has recently launched a new company to help spread awareness about mental fitness.  I'm a Positive Intelligence & Mental Fitness Expert, therefore, this is amazing news as it'll bring more light to what needs to happen in our society right now: an enormous amount of healing.

I was quoted yesterday in an article on Her Campus about why Mental Fitness is so important:

“Mental fitness has a direct impact on mental health. Angela Marie Christian, a mental fitness expert and positive intelligence coach, tells Her Campus, “Your mind can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. We need mental fitness to strengthen our mind, just as we need physical fitness to improve our bodies. When you’re mentally fit, you’re able to navigate work and relationship challenges with more ease and you’ll feel less mental stress, such as anxiety, unhappiness, frustration, and anger. Unfortunately, 80% of people score below the minimum level of mental fitness necessary for happiness and peak performance.”

This lack of mental fitness affects how your body reacts to stressors in your life, such as school work, which could cause mental health issues, especially for college students. Christan continues, “Studies show that 8 in 10 college students report high levels of stress. Therefore, introducing and providing education on campus about mental fitness would make a huge difference. Mental fitness is particularly important as they’re adjusting to a new way of life, facing an increase in demands, and worrying about COVID affecting their ability to remain in school.” Through mental fitness, college students could combat the growing numbers of anxiety and depression caused by school.”

Most people get a bit confused when it comes to mental fitness as they confuse it with mental health.  Just because you don’t have a mental illness does not mean you’re mentally healthy or fit.  Mental health is a spectrum of your emotional well-being. When it comes to the difference between mental health and mental fitness, one is a state and one is acting on that state. You do not have to experience mental illness to practice mental fitness.

To practice mental fitness, you have to engage in activities that cause your mind to think critically. These activities will help your body strengthen the mind-body connection. In the article I explain: “To start becoming more mentally fit you’ll need to start observing your mind and creating new neural pathways, which is easier than it sounds. We want to move away from reacting from our ‘survival’ brain and move toward reacting from our ‘thrive’ brain. The easiest way to boost your mental fitness is with a ‘mental fitness rep’: a 10-second to 2-minute focused meditation utilizing your senses.”

During these reps, only focus on the feeling the reps produce. For instance, you can rub the palms of your hands together for 10 seconds and focus on the feeling they produce, or you could focus on the sound you hear closest or farthest away. These meditations utilizing your senses increase gray matter in your brain, or the areas responsible for regulating emotions. When you feel negative thoughts arising, participating in these small exercises can divert from the emotion.

Mental fitness is the key to a future of calmer, happier people who know how to communicate on a higher level.  My goal is to teach children, teenagers, and adults all over the world in order to tip the weight of the world toward light, away from the dark (where we’ve been for a while now).

We hold the power within ourselves to live the life of our dreams, however, we first need to acknowledge the saboteurs we created in childhood that no longer serve us.  We ALL have these saboteurs, no matter how “perfect” your childhood appeared to be.

Below are some ways they show-up (there’s a Master Judge Saboteur and 9 Accomplice Saboteurs.  We all have the Master Judge, which is the negative self-talk in your mind.  The accomplice saboteurs were the ones created in childhood and typically we have three major ones that influence our lives.  To take the assessment and find out yours, fill-out your information here.

  1. The Controller: Anxiety-based need to take charge and control situations and people’s actions to one’s own will. High anxiety and impatience when that is not possible.
  2. The Pleaser: Indirectly tries to gain acceptance and affection by helping, pleasing, rescuing, or flattering others. Loses sight of own needs and becomes resentful as a result.
  3. Hyper-Vigilant: Continuous intense anxiety about all the dangers and what could go wrong. Vigilance that can never rest.
  4. Hyper-Achiever: Dependent on constant performance and achievement for self-respect and self-validation. Latest achievement quickly discounted, needing more.
